What is the Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is a holiday that happens every year. According to rhythmsofplay.com, since we are in the Northern Hemisphere, for us it occurs on December 21or 22. In the Southern Hemisphere it occurs on June 20 or 21. While we’re celebrating the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Southern Hemisphere, they are celebrating the Summer Solstice. The Winter Solstice is known as the shortest day of the year and the longest night. It also marks the first day of Winter.

Why do we celebrate the Winter Solstice

We Celebrate the Winter Solstice to welcome back the sun as each day grows longer and longer. Also, to celebrate the first day of Winter. There are many Celebrations and decorations that occur on the Winter Solstice. One of them involving ice lanterns.

Winter Stories

According to gathervictoria.com, one of the most notable stories is the legend of “Deer Mother”. In ancient times, people believed that the Deer Mother took flight on the darkest night of the year, carrying the sun’s life giving light in her antlers and into the new year.

There are two other winter stories which are called The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson and Here Comes Jack Frost by Kazuno Kohara. The story, The Snow Queen, is a fairy tale about a boy Kay who is stolen by the snow queen and Kay’s friend Gerda goes on a long and arduous journey to find him. She goes through many obstacles, some involving an enchanted flower garden and flying reindeers but it’s all worth it because at the end, she rescues Kay from the Snow Queen’s palace. When they arrive home at Grandmother’s house, they are adults and it is now a warm and delightful summer.

In the story Here Comes Jack Frost, a boy who hates winter notices strange patterns on his window and is befriended by Jack Frost. He follows Jack Frost in the woods and asks him if he will stay and play with him. Jack Frost says yes, but tells the boy to never mention anything warm in front of him or it’ll break the spell and force him to leave. Jack Frost and the boy have an amazing day together. One day the boy sees a snowdrop and tells Jack Frost that it is almost spring. Jack Frost disappears, but the boy hears a whisper, “see you next winter!”. These stories can be found at the website dclibrary.org where you can read more winter stories.

Decorations and Crafts to do

One way to celebrate the winter solstice is to decorate a winter solstice Yule tree. A Yule tree is a evergreen tree that’s similar to the Christmas trees we have. One craft you can do is make homemade bird feeders to add on your tree. You can also make winter solstice lanterns. According to rhythmsofplay.com, a winter solstice lantern is a symbol that our light can continue to shine even as the light and warmth of the sun are waning. Two winter Solstice lanterns to do are a heart leaf lantern and an ice lantern.

Two Winter Solstice crafts to do

Two winter solstice crafts I’m going to teach you how to make are ice lanterns and orange pomanders. Starting with ice lanterns. According to kiwico.com to making a ice lantern you first have to gather your materials. The materials you’ll need are a plastic bowl, water, bits of nature;pine cones, leaves, berries, a small glass, and a freezer.

Step 1: go into the garden or outside and gather some bits of nature. For example, you could gather pine cones, honeysuckle berries, and leaves. Step 2: Fill your Plastic bowl with water halfway. This is the shelf for the candles to sit upon. Then place your pine cones and berries in the bowl and put it in the freezer.

Step 3: Once it’s ready take it out of the freezer and get a cup. Place the cup in the middle of the frozen bowl.

Step 4: add berries and twigs in the bowl surrounding the cup. Then add more water so it’s filling the bowl.

Step 5: place the bowl in the freezer. Once it’s done freezing, take your ice lantern out of the bowl and also take out the cup. Step 6: Then add a candle in there and enjoy your ice lanterns.

The next craft I’m going to teach you how to make is Orange Pomanders. According to homemade-gifts-made-easy.com to make a orange pomander you first gather the ingredients which are a normal orange , a thin coloured ribbon (enough to wrap around your orange twice and a bit more) and cloves.

Step 1: wrap the ribbon around the orange and twist it at the base so you can divide the orange into quarters.

Step 2: Feed the ends under the piece of ribbon at the top of the orange.

Step 3: tie a simple overhand knot so you secure the ribbon init’s place.

Step 4: start to press the cloves into your orange until your whole orange is covered in cloves. Once you are done you can hang your orange on your tree or use it as a decoration around your house.
