May is Wildfire Awareness Month

Due to the huge damage wildfires can create on the environment, May is a time to bring awareness to this topic.

Wildfires have always been a problem around the world. They bring great damage to our natural environment. Every year, there are an average of 62,693 wildfires and billions of money are spent on the damage wildfires bring. Wildfires are extremely dangerous for us and the environment as they can tear down the homes of people and bring forests down to ashes. For example, the Amazon forest fire burnt millions of acres and the homes of animals were brought down. To bring awareness to this topic, we celebrate May as Wildfire Awareness Month.

How did we start celebrating Wildfire Awareness Month?

On September 6, 2010, Fourmile Canyon was caught on a huge wildfire due to the low humidity and strong winds. The fire burned thousands of acres of land and burnt down hundreds of people’s homes. A year later, on September 6, 2011, October was declared as Wildfire Awareness Month. However, in 2018, it was changed to May.

Ways we can prevent wildfires

As 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans, here are some ways you can bring awareness and prevent them.

  1.  Keep vehicles off of dry grass – oil leaked by vehicles can cause fires as they are very flammable.
  2. Build your campsite in open spaces – having a campsite around trees has a higher chance of leading to wildfires as trees are highly flammable.
  3. Don’t leave a fire unattended – not watching over a fire can lead to wildfires as there is no one able to control it.
  4. Obey restrictions in forests or any flammable places – there are restrictions for a reason. Don’t break them!
  5. Be prepared – bring any firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers.

Wildfires can burn down our forests and damage our ecosystem.

These are just some of the ways we can help keep our world safe. Wildfires are one of the most dangerous natural disasters as they can hurt our environment by tearing down trees and the homes of people. May is a time to bring awareness to this topic as we thrive to bring a stop to wildfires.
