Climate change. A horrible consequence of environmental abuse. Humans-caused disasters that will damage humanity. There are tons of reasons that we should prevent climate change and protect the environment. But how? Well, this article will introduce you to four environmental Rs —reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink— that could be used to help improve the environment little by little.

Reduce

First, reduce the number of resources and waste you create. Currently, one person creates 4.40 pounds of waste per day according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This means that a person creates 1788.5 pounds of waste yearly.

Reduce your need for many things if they are unnecessary. For example, reduce the amount of water that takes to take a shower. Grab one piece of paper towel after washing your hands. Use permanently-use items rather than single-use items. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. Start changing from small steps.

Reuse

Have you ever thrown away any kind of things because of excuses such as it is not my type anymore, doesn’t match the trend, and got tired of it? These excuses might sound reasonable, but there are other ways to solve the issue if you deeply think about them. Any items can be reused by yourself and shared with others unless they are totally not reusable. So, reuse your stationery, clothes, accessories, and many other items that can be used over and over again instead of throwing them away and buying a new one.

Recycle

The third R is recycling, which is the most common way people hear from others when they want to help the environment. It is obvious but still impactful. Recycling prevents pollution, saves energy, reduces the amount of waste, conserves raw materials, and also benefits the economy. Recycled papers reduce 73% of air pollution and 35% of pollution; recycled steel reduces 97% of the mining waste due to manufacture of virgin resources and reduces 86% and 76% of air pollution and water pollution. Also, recycling has created 1.1 million jobs, $236 billion in gross annual sales, and $37 billion in annual payroll.

To recycle, first, collect those items that are recyclable. Recyclable materials include papers, plastics, metal containers such as aluminum cans, glasses, cardboard boxes, and many other things. Then separate and throw away those items by each category.

Rethink

Finally, the most important part is to rethink. Think if your action will help your community or destroy it. You might think that your one action will not affect anything. But if every person starts to think like that, then the earth will die due to irresponsible actions of humans. Before you act, think back to the three environmental Rs.

Even right now, the earth and climate change is getting worse and worse. So, we should do what we can do. These actions might seem small, but if we put ourselves together and start to work, it will make a huge difference. So follow these steps and contribute yourself to the world. We can save the planet if we take action.
