June is national LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Pride month celebrates LGBTQ+ rights, the history of pride month, and the LGBTQ+ community. Pride month is celebrated in many ways like parades, parties, and concerts. But let’s dig deeper into what pride month is.

What does LGBTQ+ stand for?

 LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. But there are more identities which are the “+” in LGBTQ+. There is non-binary, pansexual, asexual, aromatic, etc. Learn more at

Why is Pride Month celebrated in June?

Pride month is celebrated in June due to the event known as the Stonewall riots. In the 1960s, the Stonewall Inn was a popular gay bar. Although homosexuality was legal in the state of New York, selling alcohol gay costumers were considered “unlawful practices” said in On June 28 1969. Police raided the bar to arrest those dressed as “women”. Police officers loaded cross-dressed inside a van. Most people refused and violence broke out at the Stonewall Inn. Bottles were thrown along with lighters. Several police officers “roughed up” men and women.This event started a whole wave of riots over the next several nights. According to Gay activists and supporters would meet at the Stonewall Inn and shared information with the community, that would start the gay rights movement. Pride month is celebrated in June for the beginning of the rights for LGBTQ+ community.

Ways people celebrate pride month

There are several ways people celebrate LGBTQ+ pride month. Attending a parade is one of the biggest events in the month of June. Many places in the Orange County (OC) community celebrate with hanging pride flanges in their windows along with business.  The businesses and companies that show pride and celebrate pride month are Starbucks, Bath & Bodyworks, Disney, Nordstrom, etc. in the Disney theme parks, the park is decorated with several pride flags, foods, and merchandise. Several places in the OC community celebrate pride month.

What does the Pride flag mean?

The rainbow flag is the common LGBTQ+ pride flag. But the colors represent something more than the LGBTQ+ community. There are several colors in the flag that have meanings. The hot pink in the flag represents sex. Red means life. Orange shows healing from past and present trauma. Yellow shows sunlight. Green represents nature. Turquoise means magic and art. Indigo means serenity and violet represents spirit. Other than the common pride flag, each sexual identity has a flag. Many people like to hang their pride flag on a wall in their bedroom to show who they are and that they have no shame in who they are.
