“Cancel culture or call-out culture is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person. Notably, many people claiming to have been “cancelled” often remain untouched and continue their careers as before.“-Wikipedia.
“Cancel culture is a very controversial topic through social media. There are many perspectives of looking at cancel culture, as some can be false rumors and some can be genuinely true.” Says 7th grade student Katelyn Ahn on the topic of cancel culture.
“I personally believe it’s bad because the person who is getting cancelled’s mental health can go down if they are falsely accused for something. People can’t just forget about a really traumatizing memory. If the person who is getting cancelled is accurate, then that is very toxic for our community.”
Student Melanie Zaragoza states, “Mostly when popular creators or people with larger platforms than others, they most likely get cancelled for one good day or don’t get cancelled at all and everything is forgotten. At times the reason behind the cancelling of these creators is just unintelligent and gets taken in such a big deal. When it’s not a dense reason, it’s like the cancelling never happened and it’s not much of a big deal”.
An anonymous 7th grader at Beatty Middle School says, “I think sometimes it’s a good thing but only in some circumstances. Some people who do horrible, bad things that should be brought to attention by social media especially people with large platforms. Most cases cancel culture is toxic and it something that is used for childish things that tend to not matter.”
In many paragraphs, you can see that cancel culture is not always a bad thing. Multiple students and adolescents were asked their opinion on “Cancel Culture”, including a tally of students that believe it was negative or a positive topic. Astonishingly, thirty two voted for a negative topic while zero voted positive.
Asking adolescents their opinion on cancel culture is very important considering they are exposed to this day by day on social media and it is an extremely controversial topic. This can affect opinions and overall way of thinking, positive or negative.
Most quotes intend that society needs to focus on serious worldwide problems and bring those to public affair educating people. Not a commodity someone did with a past naive and oblivious mindset.
Cancel culture is necessary for people that see topics as heedless and they need to be brought to rightful injustice. The biggest problem with this is many subjects will be labeled as controversial. Everyone should have a personal opinion, but when it comes to rightfulness and justice, there will always be a flawless and precise refute.
